Prestwick Centre Golf Club

Fun Social Work Based Golf Club

History 1973-2019

In the years BC (Before CAAGS) when we were employed by the MTCA/MCA/BOT and finally the Dept of Trade & Industry, the National Air Traffic Control Services(NATCS) staff at Prestwick Tower, Gailes Radar and ScATCC Redbrae played under the auspices of the Prestwick Airport Golf Club. The Airport Golf Club involved Air Canada, BOAC, Airport Services, Customs etc as well as NATCS and was organised by Jimmy Daubney and Chris Christianson from AIS at the terminal building. Regular competitions were held over the municipal courses with special events, such as the Four Club competition, held occasionally over Prestwick, Barassie, Old Troon etc. Sadly, the only trophy from that time which has survived seems to be the Redbrae Cup, originally a matchplay event!

On April 1st 1972, NATCS staff were seconded to the newly established Civil Aviation Authority and, as the Airport Golf Club was in terminal decline by then, a nucleus of NATCS golfers met to discuss how best to further their interest and participation in the game. It was decided to set up our own, separate golf society. The prime mover was Bill Brownlee, a Communications Officer from Oceanic who became the first Secretary and Treasurer of what was named the Civil Aviation Authority Golf Society with the suffix (Prestwick) to differentiate it from the National Society that it was anticipated would be formed in the future. This duly happened a few months later when Bill Brownlee and Doug Hollingworth attended a meeting in London of golfing representatives from all NATCS areas.

Jim Wheatley was elected as CAAGS (Prestwick) Founder President (the position of President was changed to Captain a couple of years later) and a Committee was elected to draw up a Constitution, organise affiliation to the Scottish Golf Union, arrange fixture lists and generally establish the Society as a going concern. Trophies were purchased, the most important being the Club Championship which was first contested in 1973, the winner being Tom Currie, also from Oceanic Comms. First and Second Class Matchplay competitions were started a year later.

Other trophies were donated in memory of deceased members, notably the Alex Burnett (ATCO, who died in 1974), Bruce Bonwick (Tels, who died in 1977) and of course Bill Brownlee who died in 1987. The Jack Latimer Trophy (Winter Knockout Shield) was presented to the Club by Jack’s widow after his death in 1996. The Ballygirreen Plate, played for at the Spring and Autumn outings, was presented to Prestwick OACC by the Shannon Aeradio Golf Society in 1987 to commemorate 25 years of joint Shanwick operations. The Captain’s Cup was presented by Doug Hollingworth to mark the Silver Jubilee of CAAGS (Prestwick) in 1998.

When NATS was separated from the CAA in 2000 the club required to be renamed and thus became The Civil Aviation Amateur Golf Society (Prestwick). In 2009 when Manchester ACC closed, NORWEGS (North West Golf Society) disbanded as the majority of members either retired or posted to other units, CAAGS membership benefitted from those who moved north to Prestwick Centre with around 20 new golfers joining the club. The club continued to flourish under the guidance of secretary Graham Donald until he retired in 2018. With Graham retiring and Ian Kemp taking over the role of secretary it was decided along with elected Captain Andrew Chapman (and agreed at the AGM) that the club should look at rebranding to modernise and re energise the club. The objectives of the rebranding is to continue the spirit of the club keeping it a fun, social and work based golf club and to update the name of the club to make it more relevant and to amalgamate the Ladies and Gents Sections within the Club. The aim was to have this completed for the 2020 season. In 2018 then Captain, Andrew Chapman, and with agreement from the committee created a new competition called the Captains Series which incorporated the existing monthly medals and medals final into a Fedex Cup/Race to Dubai style event to encourage, promote  and reward those that played in the Monthly Medals. At the end of the 2019 season as a result of the rebranding the Club a new competition was created known as Celebration Day to celebrate all the past and present members of the Club who have all supported and contributed to the continuing existence of the Club. At the end of 2019 the Club retired some trophies and this day is also to celebrate these great competitions and trophies that have provided the Club and it members many wonderful experiences and memories. Retired trophies include the Bill Brownlee Memorial, Bruce Bonwick Trophy, Alex Burnett, Jack Latimer Trophy, and the Ballygirreen Plate.
